Well, I watched Underworld while working today. Visually, it was pretty damn slick. The look and feel were great. The costumes, sets and scenery were rich and kept you fully immersed in the world of Werewolves and Vampires. There were two problems with the film. One - the environment was very dark and wet (shot with the deep blue filter making it almost monochromatic) and everyone wore leather. That means that everyone and everything in the film is a deep gunmetal blue/black color and shiny. It was very hard to follow who was who as they all wore dramatic full length coats (ala The Matrix) and all had long hair. The other problem was that the story was really rather stupid. It had great promise as an overall premise - but in the telling of it, the film came out rather pedestrian. It is a shame to waste all that environment on such poor writing. In any event, it is an entertaining watch although the commentary tracks are more entertaining than the movie.

The characters were cheap stereotypes which means that there was no acting performances worth mentioning. Not their fault - they had nothing to work with.

RATING 6 out of 10
