Is common courtesy dead? Discuss
A couple of recent events have made me pay attention to manners. Its not that I've run into a large amount of rudeness - just a lack of common courtesy. The simple things like "thank you," "you're welcome," and someone holding a door when you are entering right behind. I hope its just coincidence because its the everyday kind acts that keep us from ripping each others throats out.
Have I mentioned how much I appreciate you as a reader? Thanks

Common courtesy, if not dead, I think is dying a slow death. Its very sad, but I refuse to change my ways. I will be happy to be that old lady that they talk about that is from a "different generation."

Indeed, rudeness appears to be in a growth spurt. Rude behavior, much like violence and abusive acts, seems to me evidence of impotence. Persons who truly appreciate their own worth as humans and who comfortably make decisions with little regard to external pressures or popularity are, in my experience at least, polite, kind, compassionate, and thoughtful. In this culture of increased dependence on faceless power (from electronics to government) we become used to identifying ourselves as weak and needy. To the extent we marginalize ourselves, I think we cheat ourselves out of our potential as human beings with costly results personally and socially.

Seems like manners are becoming a "lost art". I hate to see that they are being lost - I appreciate when a guy does things like open the door for me. "Please" and "Thank You" are Always in my vocabulary...

Canadian society as a whole is quite amazing as a whole. The people are always willing to help you out, even just to hold open the door for you. It really depends on the way you were brought up as a child.
