Puh-lease
I would have thought the whole blogging "code of conduct" thing would have died down by now. If you don't know what I am talking about - consider yourself lucky and move on.. the whole issue is a tired waste of time.
The way I see it (and my blog is all about the way I see things) if you are going to toss yourself out in the public eye, you are going to attract some weirdos. If you don't want the weirdos, stop throwing yourself in front of the crowd. Take down your blog - turn off the microphone - shut off the camera - get off the damn stage. Problem solved.
Sure, there are some jerks out there and sure, they say some rude and hurtful things... thats part of the price of Internet fame. A "Code of Conduct" among bloggers is going to nothing more than drive traffic to the site of the guy that created the CoC badge. If someone breaks the law and makes a threat against you - take it up with the police... let's not create another level of Big Brother. Even talking about this code opens the door for the FCC and nobody wants that.
One of my favorite sayings applies... ."SAVE THE DRAMA FOR YOUR MAMA!"

I normally agree with you Chris but I think you a bit off here. Maybe a CofC in not the right direction but there does need to be discussion about just how wrong the death threats were. I had the misfortune of reading a couple and they turned my stomach. The people who made the threats are not jerks, they are crimials. Your post sounds like you are saying that if you get a death threat, well you put yourself out there so get over it. I don't think there is any "Drama" in this. What was done to the blogger in question was not "Drama" it was Terror.

Absolutely! Why is it that when people get freedom, they then want some authority to control the mess? Freedom is messy sometimes. The benefits are huge, but the cost of outsourcing its management greater.

Daryl I am with you on how wrong the death threats are and agree they should not be taken lightly. I think that is a matter for the police as it not only wrong, it is criminal... as such, there are procedures in place to deal with said terror. Thanks for the input and giving me an opportunity to clear up any confusion in my post.

I may have been a little harsh in my first post. However, with freedom come responsibility. The internet may just be a series of tubes but it also a community. As members of the community we have all the freedoms, and privileges afforded by the community. In return we have the responsibility to contribute positively to the growth and development of that community. Asking people to be open when commenting and to act with respect is a question that shouldn't even need to be asked. Your right, a cofc in not needed, but as someone who works under a code of ethics, I know that it is sometimes helpful to have something to refer to when we are faced with a decision on how we should act.
