Selections from my personal journal during college.

I'm looking at my calendar now for the month of April. It started off Saturday April 1st.

I trained for the Tour de Pines by riding a 50 mile ride. Terry assisted me by filling my water bottles as I passed. I did it in 3 hours and 45 minutes. The 3rd, I had an appointment with the Texas Employment Commission - trying to pick up a third job. The 5th, I met with one of my teachers, Tommy Fleming, to plan my schedule for the Fall and Summer. (He used to pitch in the minors for the Yankees.) The next day, I went out with Margie to see the Disney movie "The Rescuers." It was a fun date.

Nothing big happened until that Saturday. We had an all-day party out by the pool and I convinced Janie to go to Fight Night with me (amateur boxing.) I had just met her on Tuesday (after much prodding by both of our friends that we should meet.) It was, as I wrote later on my calendar (the time of my life.)

Janie and I had a great time and after Fight Night, we came back to the apartment complex and went over to Amy and Stacie's room. We sat around there awhile - Kelly and Tonya were teaming up on me and ragging on me - they were jealous of Janie!

This entry is good reading and VERY long... that is why I have created an extended entry - if you want to hear what happened ... read on.

They all decided to go to a party, but I opted to stay home - after deliberation, Janie did too. We went upstairs to my apartment and started to talk. I popped in a 6-hour long tape of music videos... one thing led to another and we started kissing.

About 1:00AM Dave came in - by this time, Janie and I were rolling around on the floor. When Dave opened the door, it struck Janie in the head and startled us out of our passion. Dave hung around talking to us (he was drunk) for what seemed an eternity. We sat biding our time until Dave went to bed and then returned to what we were doing.

At 7:00 AM, we were finishing up and I walked her home - the apartment below mine.

Unfortunately, I was so smitten by the encounter that I proved to be a bit unchallenging for her - leaving notes on her car each morning and things like that. Just as I thought things were cooling off between us, there was a repeat performance the following Saturday - although not nearly as lengthy.

Speaking of time, it's 2 1/2 weeks until Summer at which time she will graduate and go back to Dallas. I graduate in December, and I don't want to have a huge layoff before I resume the relationship. We will see how that goes - on to current events.

In basketball, the Pistons finished the regular season with the best record and my Lakers dropped to second. Feat not, Laker fans, I feel a 3rd consecutive NBA championship coming on. In football, my team the Dallas Cowboys drafted Troy Aikman. He could go a long way towards helping them regain their dominance. In baseball, my team, the New York Yankees, are 1.5 games out of first place - which is amazing considering their 7 game losing streak in the first 8 games. In world news - clean up efforts continue in Prince William Sound, Alaska as the oil spill from the Exxon tanker Valdez remains.

I ran a mile today in Body Mechanics with a time of 6:18 - not great, but better than most. I'm going to help Terry on his computer project today - all semester I've been doing his projects. He has an A average on them, and a C average on the tests. Hot songs out now - "Forever Your Girl" by Paula Abdul, a remake of "Rock On", and "She's Got the Look" by Swedish band, Roxette.

My dad called me yesterday and said Tim (my brother) cut himself real bad and was in surgery - apparently, his hand? I'm gonna call today to find out. I have a skills test in Gymnastics in 20 minutes - I'm average.

Well, that's enough for now - maybe tomorrow I'll add news about Amy, Jamie, and Stacie. (In reading back, I realized that I never mentioned it, but I've had contact lenses for over a year now.)

Holy crap - this is, by far, the longest entry. Interesting range of topics. I am very pleased that I remembered to put some historical reference data - it helps put what is going on in my life into context.

Almost a month since the last entry and quite a bit has happened. I've met a few girls and even a serious one. When I get back to the apartment, I'll look at the calendar and fill what has happened on a day-by-day basis. The key word this month is Janie (short for Janine).

Short and sweet. The big entry is the next one, it goes on for about six handwritten pages and covers everything from my personal life to world events. I may have to cut it into several posts - not only is your attention span likely not long enough to read it all, I doubt I will feel like blogging it in one sitting.

Happy Guy Fawkes Night

Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot.

Interesting history behind this day.

In recent years (and in films such as V for Vendetta) this day has come to represent a day in which the masses stand up against tryants. (ie. the November 5th fundraising push for constitutionalist Presidential candidate Dr. Ron Paul)

In actuality however, the holiday and the rhyme celebrate the exact opposite. The poem celebrates how England put an end to the gunpowder plot and captured Guy Fawkes. The celebration is a fireworks laden festival that culminates with burning the revolutionary in effigy.

A note to would-be revolutionaries... if you are going to co-opt history to rally support, it is best to get the facts first... maybe you missed the last line in the poem...

God save the King!

Big break in the writing and big news happening. Just when I figured Tonya and I were starting to have something... Lisa came back into the picture. She has been seeing Tonya's ex, Brock. Apparently he left Tonya for her - at least that's what Lisa says. Anyway, Lisa said she was going to dump Brock - so I figured he'd come running back for Tonya since she's still crazy for him.

Somehow Bryan got himself tangled in all this trying to save the world. All he did was screw up everything. Tonya got pissed because everyone is sticking their noses where they don't belong. I got the feeling that she was pissed at me Thursday when I went over to wish them a good weekend (in Dallas.) Tonya called me Thursday night just to say that she wasn't mad at me - that made things a lot better.

I haven't seen her yet so I hope her weekend went well and that she took the time to realize who really cares about her. I'm looking forward to seeing her.

I talked with Sandy this weekend - relations are improving. She talks to me like we're good friends again so that's good. Terry and I went to her softball game Thursday. We got there in the last inning and it was tied at 0-0. Sandy got up to bat and hit a double that knocked in the winning run.

I talked with Kelly too... I guess we may go out again. Oh yeah - I met a gorgeous babe at our party Wednesday named Joannie - we're going out this week! She's really pretty.

Tonya is still the one for me though. I'm just going out this week to keep from putting any undue pressure on Tonya. She's got plenty on her mind.

Oh, I have to call Dayna this week too so we can go out. They (SFA Ladyjacks basketball team) lost in the third round of the NCAA tournament to Maryland. It was a great season though.

It's been right at three months since my last Wayback entry and it looks like it was worth the wait. This entry may have broken a record for number of girls mentioned. Let me see - Tonya, Lisa, Kelly, Sandy, Joannie, and Dayna. Oh, and I love the justification for being in love with Tonya but going out with five other girls "I'm just going out this week to keep from putting any undue pressure on Tonya." Priceless. You gotta love how the mind of a a college boy works. haha

The changes keep coming

goateeback540.JPGThe last vestige of my "Wild Man of Borneo" look is gone. The hair was lopped off a little while back which took me in the direction of looking civilized and finally I dropped the full beard last night.

I decided to stay with the goatee as it is about as bald-faced as I am willing to go. It pretty safe to assume that when it comes to changing my appearance, I am good for a little while, but I will be bored soon enough. Maybe I'll go with the bald head? I have been toying with that idea for about ten years and just haven't been brave enough to give it a try.

What do you think? What should I try next? Bald? a Mohawk? I think cornrows are too 80's - haha. I am open to suggestions though.

Well, it's been five days since my last entry. Right now I am sitting in the hallway of the P.E. building. In about 10 minutes, Tonya will be coming by to go to Gymnastics. I figured I could see her and get my morning started off good.

I came home Friday as planned and Tonya and Linda were already here. Linda picked me up at the bus station - Tonya was sleeping. I hung out with Tonya Friday and although I didn't see much of her Saturday. We did go to watch the Ladyjacks win round two of the NCAA Women's Basketball Championships. They now advance to play Maryland.

Things with Tonya are getting better every day... not that things were bad - let's just say we're improving on a good thing. We have an Easter date setup - a picnic out by the lake - just the two of us.

More sappiness in this entry. I better be careful or this could hurt my curmudgeon image. Stay tuned for the next entry as things start to get a little more exciting.

Beware the Ides of March! Yes, I am up-to-date on my literature (haha). I just got back from seeing a movie with Tony. We went to see "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure." It was pretty funny - one of those movies that took no IQ to watch and if you were in the right mood, was hilarious.

Tomorrow, Tonya should be getting home. I hope it's not too late when they pull in. They have a nine hour drive so I hope they take off early. I am going to try to call her tomorrow evening to set up a ride for me from the Nac bus station on Friday. If not, I guess I'll hoof it or call a cab.

I'm really looking forward to talking to her again and especially to seeing her. Oh well... sleep time.

This entry wasn't nearly as sappy as the last one. I am still obviously pining for Tonya and "The Mescan" even got a mention. Interesting to see the earliest incarnations of my movie reviewing.

I worked on the computer today - some Spring Break :( Anyway, I rode 18 miles on the stationary bike today, and even did a few push ups. I've been going to be earlier... at college I would stay up until well after midnight every night, but its so boring around here that I've been going to bed at 10 or 11. It's 9:30 right now and I will probably go to bed after I finish writing.

I think I'll go see a movie with Tony tomorrow so there probably won't be an entry until Thursday. Speaking of Thursday, thats the day that Tonya is supposed to head back to Nac. She should be home that evening so I think I'll call her and see if she'll pick me up at the bus station when I come in Friday. Hopefully, I can spend Friday and the weekend with her before everyone comes back. Well, I guess I'll watch the end of "Midnight Caller" and hit the hay... did I mention I missed her? haha

Another sappy entry... the surprise so far is that for the first time since I was doing journal entries at college, I actually maintained focus on one girl for an extended period of time. Okay, maybe not exclusive focus... but hey, she did remain at the top for quite some time. :)

Nerd Flashback

You remember what a BBS was? You know, the bulletin board system - the precursor of the Internet. Before there was Yahoo! and MySpace, before Ebay and Amazon, there was a network of these dial-up bulletin board systems.

Most of them were run by folks like me. I had an efficiency apartment (my first place in Houston) and next to my bed sat a computer connected to the extra phone line... this was Good Sports BBS. That's right... I ran one of the most popular bulletin boards around. This sports-themed online community featured online games, chat rooms, message boards, fantasy sports, and even sports memorabilia auctions.

It is weird in that I met some of my friends through Good Sports BBS. This was in a time long before anything as exciting as video or even pictures were available online. The height of our media sharing in those days were ascii graphics (if you have to ask... never mind.) One of the biggest successes was a self-running electronic newsletter that people downloaded and played on their computer called "Digital Echo News." It featured editorials (of course) by myself, submissions from other citizen journalists, digital art, and all manner of tech news. I sure wish I could find an old copy.

The reason I bring all of this up is not to lament that I had the mechanics of an Ebay or Amazon long before the web was invented... no, its just that I noticed my only surviving remnant from that time - one lone tshirt. On my wall still hangs the only remaining tshirt from those early days. These were given out as prizes for winning things like the fantasy league or just sold so my users could show the world that they were indeed uber-geeks.

gsports001.JPG

Now, twenty years later... I am still connected via the same wires (albeit faster,) still bringing disparate people together to form communities, and still surfing on the edge of the newest geek stuff. The more things change...

Spring Break continues!!!

I worked today at my parent's business - Victoria Stained Glass. I worked on the computer for awhile and helped my brother Tom pour a concrete footing for a bridge Pops put across the pond in the front yard. I started my plyometric training today in an effort to increase my vertical jump. I want to be able to dunk a basketball, but will settle for hanging on the rim. I also rode 30 miles on the stationary bike in an effort to burn fat (Gotta get in shape to impress Tonya - yes, I have been thinking about her.) I think I'll go back Friday morning so I can spend the weekend with her before school starts back up. I really miss her.

Hopefully I can find someone to pick me up at the bus station when I get there. Well, thats about it - no earthshattering news, just let it be stated for the record - I miss Tonya

Interesting entry... I was pretty hung up on Tonya it appears. The funny thing about this post is that I actually thought I was going to be able to slam dunk a basketball. Oh, and the fact that I would settle for hanging on the rim... priceless. I actually did have a very good vertical leap, but at 5'10" a slam dunk was being seriously optimistic. I was able to touch the rim, but never quite able to grab ahold of the thing.

Selections from my personal journal during college.

Almost a week since my last entry and a lot has happened. Right now I'm at home and its Spring Break - I'll be home until next Saturday... one week from today.

First of all, and most important, Tonya is officially "just friends" with Brock. She is still without a doubt, at the top of my list for prospective partners. We've been friends for some time and I've grown to love her already as a friend. She's still pretty broken up about Brock & I want to help her out without being biased, but hey, I'd like to show her how she should be treated.

We had a heart to heart Wednesday and it looked like that went a long way towards helping us together. I think today was the first day I haven't seen her in quite a while. For the past several months, I've seen her nearly every day and I miss her now. I can't believe I won't see her for a week.

Kelly is another story. I think she was using me as an excuse to breakup with a bad boyfriend and if I helped her do that... I am happy. I had a talk with her and told her that I wanted to be just friends. She agreed, so I guess that's settled.

I went to see Dawn tonight and we discussed her upcoming marriage - she's still unsure about the whole ordeal and I still think I would marry her in a minute if I had the chance. She's meant more to me than any other girl in my life. I'm hoping now that I find that special someone to steal that title from her - Tonya?? (I hope so!)

Hmm... you know, a few years back I would never have released this entry. I was still caught up with the need to not look weak - the need to protect "my image." But you know what? I don't really care now... maybe that is this maturity thing I have heard so much about? haha Exposing some of my inner feelings from 16 years ago isn't nearly as threatening to me now. I find it kind of humorous now that I can talk with such passion about a particular girl while at the same time switch gears instantly to talk about the next one.

Like that proverbial chicken....

... you know the one - sans head. That is what my weekend is shaping up to be like. It began with a riveting football game last night with Lone Star Gridiron cohost, Mike Wright, and things don't appear to be slowing anytime soon.

I am in the preliminary stages of putting together this weeks PMC Top10 in the few remaining minutes I have before heading out for an all-day video shoot. (All night too.) I am trying to fit it in as best I can because I also have a shoot Sunday morning. That is my normal PMC time, but things are just too tight this time around.

You would think it would slow down a bit after that, but no sleep for the weary. I also have to put together a "Greatest Bonus Tracks" retrospective show for next weeks PMC Top10 because I will be in San Miguel de Allende and unable to do the regular show. Monday will be wall-to-wall meetings with programmers, bankers, designers, ad agencies, podcasters, etc. Oh and somehow I have to get all that finished before an early Tuesday morning flight.

Am I complaining? Well, maybe just a little - but it is under this kind of pressure that I actually perform best. You can "bet your bippy" though, that when I hit my travel destination, I am going to kick back for at least a few hours. Then it starts all over again... just in a different language. :)

My place of birth

I have been jumping through bureaucratic hoops for the past week trying to get a copy of my birth certificate (don't get me started on that hornet's nest of incompetence.) During my search, it dawned on me that because I lived in Red Wing, Minnesota for less than a year after my birth, I didn't really know anything about where I was born. Lets start off with a photo.

redwing32.jpg

redwinglogo23.jpgWhat a gorgeous city! At least when it isn't covered in snow... but then I imagine it has another beauty altogether. Red Wing is home of the world famous Red Wing Shoes - more famous now for their rugged line of boots.

The article on Wikipedia is an excellent resource that gives a bunch of census data and interesting facts. It is the county seat of Goodhue County - what a great name for a county. Looking at the picture, it appears to be the perfect small town (16,610 pop.) I love the cliffs and bluffs overlooking the city and of course all the trees. If it wasn't for the 60ft snowdrifts and 6 months of winter, I just might be tempted to pack everything up and move.

For now, I will just be content to continue learning about my childhood home in the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" - Minnesota.

The state is known for its moderate-to-progressive politics and social policies and its civic involvement and voter turnout. It ranks among the healthiest states by a number of measures, with the fifth highest median household income and has one of the most highly-educated and literate populations.

No wonder when I moved to Texas, it took me three years of schooling before I learned something new. No offense to Texas, it is full of some of the greatest people on the planet, it was lagging quite far behind in education back then and has improved much since that time.

Well Kelly did show up at the game Thursday, but she was with Shaun (her ex-boyfriend.) I tried to call her Friday, but was told she went to Houston for the weekend. Anyway, I am at the game Saturday and halfway through the first half, I glance over and about ten seats over is Kelly waving at me. I went and talked to her for a bit (which upset Tonya) and told her I would call after the game. When I got back to the apartment she called and we talked. Tonya was still with and got visibly bummed out that I was being a less than gracious host - I was secluded in my room talking with Kelly. Tonya opted to leave and stuck her head in to say "goodbye." (I am really quite a jerk at times, I am not sure why I try to keep them all juggling in the air.)

After talking on the phone for about an hour, I borrowed Dave's car to go pick her up and bring her back to the apartment. We (ahem) went at it until about four in the morning. It looks like there is a definite possibility there. Oh well, I will just have to wait and see. In the meantime I just hope I don't do anything to screw things up with anyone else in case I find out Kelly isn't the right one for me. I'll leave you with that bit of confusion.

Geez... that boy has some serious issues. I am sure a psychologist/psychiatrist could write a book about how insane my thinking was. All the while, I knew I had fallen for Tonya, but never one to rely on the "bird in the hand," it seemed I was always doing my best to screw that up. In hindsight, hurting Tonya was probably my biggest regret from those years.

What's that?... A ray of light breaketh from yonder sky! That's right, sportsfans, you guessed it - things are looking better. I got a phone call from Kelly and she informed me that, no, she hadn't been screening her calls and if she had, mine would be the only ones she let through. Soon, her and I will be... well, you know.

She's coming to the basketball game with us Thursday and we are going out this weekend as well. Later.

Wow, was I really like that? I think this reads a lot more goofy than I really was. I come across as part bipolar and part schoolgirl. Maybe I've just gotten more jaded with age - haha. Its funny how in such a quick amount of time, I went from cockiness over having four girls on the line to insecurity as I couldn't get ahold of any of them and then sappy when one called me. Total elapsed time was like three days. Youth comes with so much drama.. haha.

Well I bared my soul to Tonya - I let her know how I feel --> no reply. Story of my life - that's all I'm getting from each of them - silence. That's okay, I'm a tough guy.

I've been meaning to write Dawn since I found out she was getting married, but I haven't made the time. As far as Kelly, Margie, and Anne go - I'm just gonna forget about them. If they call, they call - if not, its their loss. This romance stuff is for the birds. Maybe I'll concentrate on cycling or (shudder) schoolwork. In any event, I will survive.

Wow... the downswing continues. There is actually a lot of information in this little post. One that I was bummed out about Tonya, miffed about not hearing from the other girls I was wooing at the time, and completely forgot to mention a couple others. More importantly though is the whole "world revolves around me" attitude evident from the entry - you gotta love that. Oh to be young and dumb again.

I received no calls last night so I guess rather than be a pest, I'm gonna wait... if they want to talk with me, they'll call. I've been having somewhat of a bummer day. I've been sitting in my room playing sad ballads. (NO, not because I am sad... I just like ballads.) Terry just walked in, I guess I'll go and be a good host. I'll get back to this later.

PART II

Well, its official, Brock & Tonya are getting back together. I think that statement has me bummed out more than any that will follow. Hell, I know it does! Anyway, so on with the bad news. I called Margie and she hasn't called me back - no big loss. :) Anne is somewhat of a mystery... I don't know her well enough to be hurt by her not returning my calls. Kelly is another tough one. I ask for Kelly when I call and they say "Yeah, I'll go get her." Then they return and say, "I'm sorry... she'snot here, can I take a message?" Sure seems like she is screening her calls.

It sure looks bad for the Collegiate Cassanova in this post... and actually the next few to come. Could it be that the "magnet" doesn't work? Could it be that the magic is gone? Or could it be that I was incredibly impatient with a huge ego, and if a few hours went by without someone talking about me or to me that I would start to panic? Stay tuned...

Two days in a row! Well, I talked with Tonya and its my opinion that her and Brock are getting back together although she hasn't said anything either way. I talked to Anne today but she was riding so she said she'd call back ---> she didn't. Oh well, I'm not gonna call her back.

I left a message on Margie's answering machine to call me, but she didn't. I also left a message at the ZTA house (sorority) where Kelly lives but she hasn't called back either When it rains it pours.

It looks as though I'm on the downward swing of my many romantic peaks and valleys. Such is life!

How is that for a sad entry? Four strikes in the same day haha. I guess it served me right for having four girlfriends I could call in the same day - ahah. The next few entries continue the romantic lull, but fear not, Dear Reader, for it did turn around shortly.

Well, as luck would have it, I have seen Kelly again. In fact, it was the very next day. We went to a movie. We held hands during the movie and things seems to go quite well. I'm going to call her tomorrow after class.

I'm supposed to call Anne and Margie tomorrow to plan our dates. I just back from Tonya and Linda's - we watched TV... Tonya and I had a ticklefest. (We're both very ticklish) She got a phone call from her ex. Brock and came back in the room smiling. She's the one that got dumped on in the relationship and she said she'd like to get back together. I can only speculate as to why she was smiling about the phone call, but no matter what happens, I wish her the very best.

That seems to be the case with all the girls I have dated. In my quest for the "perfect one," I have driven away quite a few and been given up on by many more. But as T.G. Shepherd said in his one hit - "I loved 'em, every one."

I know this is a longer entry than usual, but this seems to be a pivotal point. I'm seeing four different girls, trying to decide if I can committ to one of them. Well, before I get too weird, I'm gonna end it here.

Ahhh... college days. Amid all the basketball, football, bad food, and waaay too many hours spent playing D&D... I was a dating machine. What can I say, I have never had any self-control at a buffet - and college was certainly a cornucopia of hot women. You think dating four girls at the same time is bad... stay tuned as this starts to read more and more like a sitcom in future entries.

Well, I just got back from my date with Kelly. I am already dreaming of a two-story country home with a sunken den and our two little boys playing out in the yard. Seriously, in case you hadn't guessed - I had a good time. She's really nice and downright beautiful. When I walked her to the door, she asked if I was going to call again... I pretended to think about it for a bit... but then said emphatically "definitely." I am looking forward to seeing her again.

Next week I have two dates... one with Anne (cycling) and one with Margie (church girl) but right now I am thinking about Kelly. I am going to read a bit and go to bed. Later.

There are a couple interesting things going on in this post. First, I was apparently smitten with Kelly. She was blonde, athletic, and very nice. She appreciated the humor and enjoy doing things. Obviously, it didn't work out because I am not with her now... but she was cool. The other interesting factor is the bit about a "country home..." It reads like it might have been a real vision of the future, but the word "seriously" implies that it was all a parody.

The breakup with Kelly was really one of those non-events. I had a lot of those in my day... times where my interest in a girl waned because I was attracted to the current shiny object. I had a real bad habit of just not calling much. As the gaps between phone calls increased, there was really nothing to break off. At that point in my life it was really more about the challenge than emotion. Apparently, it still is.

And before you decide I was/am a total cad, let me say that there were never any false representations made... lies or deceit of any kind were never used. As Sawyer (from Lost) would say... "I'm a real complicated guy." (read that tongue-in-cheek, as I thought that was the corniest line I have ever heard in a TV show.)

Selections from my personal journal during college.

Well, I called Kelly - we planned a date for Thursday night (tomorrow,) but she called back later and said she had a sorority meeting and we have to postpone our date. Oh well - theres always next week. I talked to Tonya and her "friend" Tyson came by while she was talking so she said she had to go and she would call me back later - I'm not holding my breath.

I really hurt myself bad today in Gymnastics. My chest and shoulder on the right side hurt like mad whenever I move my right arm. I hope it feels better tomorrow or I may go to see a doctor.

So overall, this hasn't been a banner day for me. Both of my roommates are leaving town this weekend so I guess I'll just kick back and recover. I think I'll start including some lyrics to songs in my journal - as they help round out my personae by showing the type of music I listen to. Well, I'm in pain so I'm gonna crash now.

Wow... that was probably the saddest entry in my journal. As I am usually very positive - the fact that I even mentioned something not working out perfectly was pretty rare. What wasn't rare in those days was my proclivity to use run-on sentences. haha!

Selections from my personal journal during college.

Went to the Ladyjacks basketball game tonight and had a pretty good time. We were really fired up as we are ranked #13 in the nation and we played #8 ranked Ole Miss. We blew them away by 20 points. I know two of the girls on the team and they both played really well. Dave, Linda, Tonya, Terry, and I went.

Due to the weather, school has been cancelled for the past two days and we start back up tomorrow.

I think that I'm going to ask Patty out. I also have two other girls in mind to ask out. I'm going to call Kelly and try to set something up for Thursday night. This weekend both mine and Tonya's roommates are going out of town, so maybe we'll have some time alone. I guess I'll have to wait and see... hopefully we will stay out of trouble (hehe.) On the serious side, I have several partial romances going - I know it sounds bad.

Yeah, that was pretty much life in college - sports and basketball. Oh to be young and dumb again. :)

Well, the end of another busy day. I talked to Tonya - everything is fine between us. We have a mutual attraction, but we are going to be just friends for now. I called Kelly but she was out, so I left a message with my number. She called me about 9pm tonight. We have a date setup for this weekend - I think we'll have a great time. Things are on a definite upswing romantically.

The temperature is still in the teens and we plan on going to the football stadium tomorrow to slide down the iced-over sides. Juvenile - but fun!!

Nice... I "cut a deal" with Tonya so that I can date Kelly... I really was an ass in college. In retrospect, it probably wasn't the best move. Oh well, at least we had fun sliding on the ice - haha.

Well, today is Saturday. I skipped Body Mechanics class on Friday, but I went to Gymnastics. I plan on practicing my gymnastics today. We had a party last night and I'm waiting fro my roommates to awaken so we can play basketball. It's 10:45am! I usually get up by 7:00am at the latest.

The party was a lot of fun - I met a girl last night - what a knockout! Her name is Kelly and I've seen her on campus before but never actually met her. Anyway, I was my usual flirtatious self - we hit it off quite well. Linda got upset saying that I was dumping Tonya. We discussed it with Tonya and we agreed that although there was a mutual attraction - there was nothing set in concrete. We'll have to wait and see - I did get Kelly's phone number though. The gang is going to a basketball game tonight - later.

More fun stuff from the wild ride that was college. Its funny how the things that seem so small now, seemed like big deals then... and of course, the things that I glossed over without a thought back then turned into pretty important events.

Yesterday Tonya, Terry, Linda, Holly, Michelle, and I went to the SFA basketball game. It was fun - both the boys and girls teams played and they both won. We came back here afterward and had a couple pizzas and watched a movie.

We discussed tentative plans to spend Spring Break in New York City - hopefully everything will go as planned. Right now only Tonya and I are seriously planning to go... and shes only half serious. No biggie eitherway - although it would be fun. Tonya also invited me to Los Angeles this summer to spend two weeks - it could be fun and tentatively I plan on going.

I did skip classes Friday but I've decided to get serious now. I still don't know what the deal is with Tonya yet... We're good friends and in the event that something more came of it - we have that as a good foundation. More details as they come... Later.

Well, the NY trip didn't happen and neither did the LA trip. "The best laid plans..." The carousel of girls just keeps on spinning too... funny stuff.

Well, Tim came and left while I was in class - I was pissed because he had Scooter with him and I didn't get to see him.

Sandy and I are getting along fine now. I know that I mentioned a girl named Anne before in passing. Anyway, to refresh - she also bikes and we've ridden together quite a few times. I saw her yesterday and she said "Hi." She is so freakin' hot - I think I'll call her and go riding now. I am headed over to Tonya's apartment later tonight to watch a movie. Later

This one is just pretty much about hormones after you get past the quick comment about Tim & Scooter. Three girls in one paragraph... nice - haha.

Quick Update

I just saw that it has been a few days since I posted so I figured I would give a quick update. Things have been extremely busy lately. I ended up not going to Victoria for Thanksgiving - I just had too much work to do with the broken water pipe and various other tasks.

Today, Dave and I are heading to film a wedding. When I get back, it will be time to change from the suit to the Lone Star Gridiron shirt and head to the Brenham vs. Rosenberg Terry playoff game. If it is anywhere near as good as the LaPorte/Cy Falls game we caught last night - it will be a blast.

Mindy brought by a dog yesterday afternoon that she found wandering. She basically brought it over to drop with me because "it looks like a black version of Lou" and she has three dogs at her house right now. I told her I would hold onto it until someone calls looking for it. Lou gets along fine with it, except he is constantly trying to hump it. Nardo steers clear and really wants nothing to do with it. The dog is extremely well taken care of, and extremely well behaved. It is obviously someone's dog so we left the info with the neighborhood pet hotline. If I get a chance Monday, I will take it by the vet to see if it has a microchip. I just know that as sweet as the dog is, I would surely be missing him if he were mine.

Sometime after the football game, I have to complete this weeks Pod Music Countdown... (that will most likely be done around 4am) and I guess tomorrow I will put out another episode of Riding with the window down... It has been quite a while since I did one.

Oh yeah... and once again - sometime in there I will sleep.

Selections from my personal journal during college.

Friday, I went to all of my classes - we ran 3 1/2 miles in Body Mechanics and we worked out in Gymnastics - I was pretty tired. Oh, I came in first in the Body Mechanics run. I think I am going to ask the instructor out on a date in my Body Mechanics class. Don't worry - she's my age... a gorgeous graduate student

The 23rd Super Bowl was played today. The San Fransisco 49ers beat the Cincinnatti Bengals 20-16. I was upset as I was rooting for the Bengals. I went bowling with Tonya, Bryan, Linda, and Terry. I bowled the worst game of my life - oh well!

I called Sandy to ask about the class I missed - she was cold. Overall, it was a pretty bad day. I was upset because I like Tonya (she's a great friend and maybe could be more) and her roommate Linda likes me (I like her as a friend butm I have too many other interests right now.) Anyway, Tonya is seeing this guy named Brock and although I really only want Tonya to be happy, it still upsets me. Basically, I was being a butthead tonight because his name kept coming up in the conversation and Linda kept making advances. (It was taking away from me pouting! haha)

Oh, Bryan has taken up riding - we rode 11.8 miles today and he wants to ride to Houston (roughly 120 miles) on Spring Break. I'm game, I hope he gets in good enough shape. Oh, and my brother Tim may come see me tomorrow, hopefully he will bring Scooter with him. Well, it looks like this is a good stopping point.

Wow... like sands through the hourglass...
This one is chock full of intrigue. A love triangle... or is it a hexagon - there were too many in college to remember. More reminders that I used to be in good shape... that is a bummer to read - haha. I did ask out the instructor and we did go out a couple times. She went on to fame and fortune as a women's basketball coach. The thing with Tonya got more and more screwed up. Bryan and I never did do the ride to Houston and Tim did bring Scoot along for the visit.

Well alot has happened in the past few days. Yesterday - Wednesday went pretty well, I guess. I rode 12.3 miles on my bike and I had a flat tire so I had to walk home the final 3.5 miles. Terry, Dave, and I went and played basketball too. We took turns playing each other one-on-one. First, I beat Terry 20-18, then I beat Dave 20-14. While we were playing against each other I got asked to join in another game so I went. We played two games and the team I was on won both. Overall, it was a very good day for basketball.

Today I skipped both of my classes - no reasons or excuses, just lazy. I've mainly been sitting around reading or watching TV all day.

As you can see, a good day of basketball meant a lot more to me than a good day of attending class. Hmmm... that is still true. :)

Well the college semester is in full swing now. I'm rooming with two people - Davad Sneed and Bryan Orsborn, we get along like typical rommmates. The classes that I'm taking this semester are as follows: Body Mechanics, Gymnastics, Teaching/Coaching Techniques of Basketball, Psychology of Aggression, and Physiology of Exercise.

The weather is getting nice enough to ride my bike again. Class is really going well so far - I really like Body Mechanics and Exercise Physiology. I haven't seen enough of the others to decide yet. I'm shooting for a 4.0 this semester. If you'll stop laughing for a minute, I know I've said that before but its time for me to get serious.

My mom is going for another operation on February 1st, the actual operation is the 2nd. I'm hoping everything goes fine.

Well I'm not seeing anyone in particular up here yet <---key word. I've got my eye on a few options.

My friend from Houston - Terry Rochen is back at college. Everyone is glad to have him back. I told his parents that I would help him with his schoolwork if need be.

I only rode 2.7 miles today because my riding shoes are too tight and I tried to wear them today. Tomorrow I'm going to wear my regular shoes and ride at least 15 miles. I also plan on updating this journal soon - that is, going back and reread it and finish what I've forgotten to write. So if I've left you in the dark about anything - fear not the conclusion is forthcoming.

A big post with a very scattered approach. I touched on a lot of things that were happening at the time. My moms surgery was fine. The roommate situation with Dave and Bryan was a ton of fun, a ton of conflict, and well-worth it all.

It's funny that of all the friends from college... those are the only two that I regularly talk with... Dave on a daily basis and Bryan every couple weeks. I don't see Rob since he left the company. I haven't seen Terry ever since I kissed a girl he liked in my last year at SFA. Jon and I used to be very good friends... that is until he announced he was gay. I guess he was expecting some big sort of drama - but I basically said, "Okay... that's cool," and didn't see how that changed anything. Sure, I did get a little tired of it being the only thing he wanted to discuss - sex was rarely a topic of conversation before, I just didn't see why it should be the only topic after he came out.

Oh well - save the drama for your mama, cause daddy ain't interested! (I just came up with the second part of that saying and am officially coining it)

I am at work now - well in a few minutes anyway. I'm working at my parent's company - Victoria Stained Glass Studio, Inc. during the Christmas break. I run the computer for them.

About 9:30PM last night I played basketball with Roger Keith, his brother Neal, and Tony Vasquez. Yesterday morning the part of the toothpick left in my foot came out after some digging. It was about 3/4 of an inch long. My foot feels great now. It didn't hurt at all during basketball last night. We played for about two hours. I felt great because I stuffed Roger (blocked his shot) and he's a heck of a lot taller. I plan on play basketball this afternoon too.

An interesting mix of thought processes in this entry as well as some peripheral information on what was going on. I mentioned my parent's stained glass company and that I was doing computer work. What hasn't been mentioned is that for the previous few years before college I worked in the studio as an artist. That's right - I designed church windows. I probably know more about the Bible than most people who attend church regularly just from having drawn images of all the stories over and over and over.

In addition, since large amounts of my free time at college was spent playing basketball, it makes sense that the Christmas break would also contain a ton of hoops.

I just got back from town. I went with my brother Tim, his wife Sandra, their sons Blake (Scooter) and Brian, and the neighbor's three kids Chris, Gary, and April. We went to Putt-putt and played. I won. I had a score of 40 on a par 36 - the next closest was Tim with a score of 50. We had a great time.

I rode the stationary bike earlier for 10 miles and lifted weights for quite a while. Tomorrow I'm going to pack for college - I'm not leaving until Wednesday - but I've got a lot to get ready.

More national interest material - in the movies now are titles such as Rainman - Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise; Twins - Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito. Rainman is really good and I think Dustin Hoffman deserves an academy award for hsi performance. Twins is really funny and I think that Arnie has succesfully made the transition from action to comedy. Well, that's all for now - I'm gonna do a little reading.

Hoffman did in fact win the Oscar for Best Actor, so I guess I pegged that one right. I am pretty sure I mentioned the Putt-putt victory because normally Tim and I are within one stroke of each other with him coming out on top more often than not, so to beat him by 10 strokes was a big deal.

I just got a burst of energy today - I rode 17 miles on the stationary bike, I lifted weights, and I worked for eight hours. My foot still hurts when I step wrong on it. I fear that when classes start up I won't make the time to write in my journal so it may get jumpy. Oh well!

I called Sandy and basically I got dumped! She said that shes seeing someone up there and its starting to go good so once again I am without a female companion. It's strange... I can attract almost any girl, but I have trouble hanging on to them. No matter - I've adopted an old quote as my own - "Its better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all."... story of my life - haha.

Today is Thursday - I'm heading back to college on Tuesday. Tony gets off at midnight on Tuesday and we are taking off right then. Its about a four and a half hour drive so we'll be pulling in early Wednesday morning.

The big news story is that early this morning two American fighter planes shot down two Libyan jets who had provoked them. In football, the Cincinnatti Bengals will play the Buffalo Bills for the right to play the winner of the San Fransisco 49ers/Chicago Bears game in the Super Bowl. My sentinmental pick is the Bengals over the 49ers in the Super Bowl in a rematch of a few years back.

Oh yeah - another world note. The US has accused Libya of running a factory for producing used in chemical warfare. Libya claims it is a medicine factory. The US hasn't ruled out military action to destroy the factory. Well, I'm about ready to hit the sack (sleep) so I'll end it here.

A ton of interesting stuff in this entry. A glimpse into my personal thoughts and feelings related to women. A look at the affairs that shaped the world during the opening stanza of 1989. A glance at the world of NFL football - I did get my rematch of the 49ers and Bengals - but once again, the Niners took home the win.

A sports item of note that I did not record in my original journal entry: Major league baseball signs a $400 million contract with ESPN that will put 175 games per year on cable television beginning in 1990.

First entry of the new year! Well, I've been to see Dawn every night for the past five days. Don't freak out - theres nothing romantic going on... she is happy with her friend Brad - in fact, she's in Corpus Christi visiting him which probably explains why I found the time to write.

My foot injury flared up - it developed an abcess and just as I thought it was getting better, it swelled up and started hurting. This morning I went in to see Dr. Ted and get it fixed. It was his day off and he saw me anyway. (He is a good friend of my dad.) He cut it open and squeezed all the puss and blood out. It hurt like #@*!! Right now its 9:30PM and it hurts like hell. I haven't been able to bicycle or play basketball in several days.

I also lost my voice yesterday. I don't feel bad, but I can't talk very good.

In the sports world - #1 Notre Dame deated #3 West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl total to capture the National Championship. UCLA defeated Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl. UCLA's quarterback Troy Aikman is likely to be the number one draft choice of the Dallas Cowboys - but I think if Steve Walsh decided to quit college ball early, he would be a good choice.

Well, I guess that's all for now and until next time, may all your jumpers hit nothing but the bottom of the net.

PS. In reading back, I realized that I didn't explain the foot injury - back on the 20th, I stepped on a toothpick which went into my foot about an inch. It was right on the ball of the foot making walking impossible. It got better and a couple of days ago, it started to swell so I had to get it cut open today.

Another interesting post... I spent an awful lot of time that Christmas break writing about Dawn even though we had been broken up for a very long time at that point. Reading the post also caused me to reflect on the fact that my dad, his friend Dr. Ted and Notre Dame's football program are now dead. The post also points to conclusive evidence of what I call my greatest sports prognostication flub ever... I was in the Steve Walsh camp and thought that Aikman would not develop into a long-term pro QB. Oh well.

Yesterday was pretty cool. I worked until 3:30 and then I went into town to get a haircut. I also bought a flower arrangement to take by Dawn. She really liked the flowers and we had a pretty good evening. She looked like a chipmunk because both of her cheeks were swollen. She kept getting mad at me for making her laugh because it hurt. Well, not much else as far as news goes. In world events... it has been determined that a bomb was responsible for the crash of an airliner over Scotland that killed around 250 people. Relief works are in progress for earthquake ravaged Soviet Armenia in which the dead were numbered over 20,000.

This entry is interesting on several levels. First, I failed to mention in the post that the reason Dawn's cheeks were swollen was because she had her wisdom teeth removed earlier that day.

The simple aside about world events is very interesting in hindsight. The Lockerbie airline bombing was one of the earliest terrorist acts by fundamentalist Muslims against the Western world. It would take 13 more years of attacks around the world (and the U.S.) and the events of September 11th to evoke an all-out response by America.

Also, the comment about the earthquake is a reminder that the Soviet Union was still intact. The Berlin Wall wouldn't fall for another year and the USSR would last another three years. Crazy, huh?

History - Past, Present, and Future

10 years ago: I had hired Dave to come work with me at the YMCA. Three days after he started, I quit my job to start my own company. A few days later, the fear hit and I asked for my job back - the YMCA welcomed me back. A couple months later, I quit for good and started my consulting company.

5 years ago: Things were flying high at the consulting company... after doubling in size each year since its inception, I had hired Dave to come work once again. The sky was the limit - the internet boom was in full swing and we were making plans to expand to three cities and beyond.

1 year ago: I was in training for my first Ride for the Roses event and just finished the Katy Flatland Century the day before. Brian and I were in the attic fixing the air conditioner.

Yesterday: I edited a video project for a client during the day and then went to Fuddrucker's in the evening to pitch them on becoming the "pre-show meal sponsor" for the Lone Star Gridiron podcast. They liked the idea.

Today: Working on accounting and waiting for a client to provide additional video for editing. Meeting with the Pizza Factory to discuss sponsorship of the Lone Star Gridiron podcast. They seem interested too.

Tomorrow: More editing - Lone Star Gridiron podcast #005 will be recorded and Reliant Park World Series of Dog Shows opens.

It's journal time again... its been awhile and I had planned on writing earlier but I don't seem to have the time. I know, I know - just set apart a time everyday to write... easier said than done. I think this entry will try to summarize whats been happening lately.

Right now I am on my way to San Antonio with my brother Tom. I'm back at home (Victoria) because of the Christmas holidays. Christmas is over - it was pretty cool. I got riding shorts and cycling tights from the folks. Tim got me a miniature basketball goal & backboard to put up in my room at college. Tom got me a shirt. The best part about Christmas though was Scooter and Brian (my nephews.) In fact, the best part about coming home was seeing them.

I've called Sandy twice during the break. Both times we had a good talk. I can't wait to get back at college to see her. I sent her a musical teddy bear for Christmas - it plays a little melody when you squeeze the paw. It has like a dozen different Christmas songs - I'm sure she'll like it.

My sister Julie had a baby boy at about 6:30 Christmas morning.

She chose the name Nicholas for him. I was happy because I suggested the name. She said it was between Nicholas and Christopher and when I told her that I like Nick and wouldn't be offended by not naming him Chris, she picked it. I think his middle name is gonna be Bernard. That should make my pops happy. Anyway, she's bringing him home from the hospital today.

I guess I should also mention our little trip to Houston last week. Tuesday the 22nd, Tony Vasquez and I went to visit Mike Wright and to go out dancing. Anyway, we went to a club called Randy's and had a pretty good time. Mike and Tony were pissed at me because I was dancing with the good looking girls and they were just standing around. I met a real nice girl named Barbie. I'm supposed to see her when I go up there again.

Two nights ago, I went to visit Dawn and her family (Christmas night.) Dawn and I had a heart to heart and I can't figure it out but things may be improving between us - maybe she feels threatened by Sandy - maybe she feels that she can be friendlier since I have other romantic interests. .....

..... I had a 2:00 basketball appointment with the missionaries so I took off over there. There were 6 missionaries and they were finishing up a game when I got there. We had seven people so we decided to go 3 on 3 with one person sitting out. After a game, the winning team would stay in and the guy sitting out would play - of the three losers they would shoot free throws to see which two got to play. The first game I was in we lost, but I made my free throws to keep playing.

This new team was the right combination. I started off not shooting too well - I was cold. I hit and 18ft turn-around jumper that ripped the net to end the first game. We won so we kept our team intact. Our one liability on our team was a 5'8" guy who would shoot every time he got the ball. He shot about 15%. My other teammate, Elder Mooy, is about 6' 2" and quick for his size as well as a good shooter. We won 5 straight games and my friend Tony showed up so we went full court 4-on-4... we won both fullcourt games too - I had a blast.

Well, I think I set the one day writing record for this journal - Oh and just a little sports tidbit - my favorite basketball team, the LA Lakers, winners of the last two championships have lost 7 of their last 9 - their worst in ten years... bummer.

Geez, I covered a lot in that entry (and I edited out a ton of stuff.) The biggest bit of news had to be the birth of my nephew Nick... The story of going out dancing with Mike and Tony is funny too - I actually remember that night really well. And what would a journal entry be without some reference to my sports exploits... it was a huge part of my life back then.

Well I just rolled back into Nacogdoches following the Thanksgiving break. I took a bus from Houston where I went this morning with Tim. I know that I sound somewhat fickle when I say this, but I'm very interested in a girl named Sandy Green. She's from Canada. She pitches on the SFA softball team. She's a really nice girl and I think I'm falling for her. She doesn't know yet what she wants - haha. Oh, I still like Margie, but I think she's seeing some guy named Lance.

We played the fourth annual Turkey Bowl (football game) Thursday morning - we won the fourth straight. The score was 77-35. I threw four touchdown passes, caught three TD passes and ran back an interception for one score - I had a blast.

I saw a few of my friends and my family, but my mind was miles away (Canada.) I told Dawn about her and we had a fun conversation. I miss her too! haha I don't guess I've said anything about Dawn - I started dating her when I was a high school senior '82-83. We went together for about 3 years. We broke up - I won't go into why or how.

Oh... Monday we're moving out of the on-campus apartments into a real apartment complex - 3 bedrooms 1 1/2 baths. Dave, Bryan and I are living together. And just so I have it in writing somewhere, I plan on buying a Jeep come summertime. I've been without a vehicle for about a year and it makes dating rough. This weekend I'm going to Houston to watch the Houston Rockets play the Charlotte Hornets (an expansion team) with Terry Rochen - my friend from Houston and Michael Wright, who I graduated high school with. Well, I guess I'll go to bed and dream of Sandy. I'll try to write more often.

Wow, how sappy was that? I guess you figured that the Sandy thing didn't really work out - maybe it could have been my lack of focus... haha. I kept thinking of Bruce Springsteen's "Glory Days" while reading about the Turkey Bowl... and it really was a full crowd of people playing - not just me against a couple geriatrics. Oh yeah - and I never got the Jeep that summer.

Following is an excerpt from a letter I received from my brother Tom around the same time:

Say Bro,
What's happening? Thought I'd better surprise ya by dropping you a line, heard you had a little problem with your old rommate, have you found one yet? How are things at the old alma matter? What are your classes this semester? San Antonio is just great. Me & Kirby are in business for ourselve already, we are doing windows in houses, so far we've done two jobs and have only had to work 4 days out of 2 weeks to pay all the bills and screw off the rest of the time, now this is how life is meant to be - relaxed! Of course the people we work for all live on the north side of SA and all got bookoos of bucks. I had to put the remainder of my settlement money in a business account because to have one you have to maintain a balance of no less than $1000 but at least it will always be there!

Still haven't been back home but I have called them, and I'm still going to take time to help them with their jobs now and then. I heard dad got him a 88 ram charger with a 318 in it sounds cool, did you see it? How was the biathalon you and Mike entered, did you win? Well suppers cooking, got to go.

I had forgotten all about Tom's stint in San Antonio as well as the biathlon that Mike Wright and I entered. He did the running portion and I did the cycling part. We did not win, but we came in way toward the front and calculated that if each of us trained we could be winning those things. (Despite our best intentions, that was the only one we ever did.)

Its been awhile since I wrote last. Its 11:13 PM - I'm sitting in the apartment listening to Billy Joel on my tape player.

I went to the football game today. Prior to todays game, the SFA Lumberjacks (our team) were ranked #9 in the nation (the best in their history) and we played the team ranked #1 - the University of North Texas. (DIV-II) We beat them! It was great. We should be ranked in the top 5 by tomorrow.

I've become really good friends with a girl named Margie. She's everything you could ask for in a girl. She's smart - shes funny - she is just a joy to be around. Her qualities are too numerous to mention.

Well, my lofty goal of a 3.5 GPA this semester is shot to heck. I'll probably end up somewhere around the 2.0 range. I constantly procrastinate about studying.

Bush is ahead of Dukakis in the polls by 10-15%. The election is a few days away.

Larry Centers who went on to NFL fame was our running back and Todd Hammel who went on to be one of the top QBs in Arena Football was our quarterback... it was a fun team to watch. We won't go into any detail about Margie - haha... obviously she wasn't so darn perfect. (Hmm... or it just may have been me - haha)

Following is an excerpt from a letter I received around the same time from Tony Vasquez shortly after a visit up to see me at SFA:

What's happening crazy one? Right now I'm watching the Dodgers demolish the Mets . It is 6-0 right now Dodgers winning. Boy this is great a possibility that the Dodgers will be playing the A's in the World Series.

I have spent most of my fun time with Annie (you know my special friend from Cody's) that I have not seen or heard from Mike or Donald lately....

I can't just wait to say hi to all the fine and gorgeous babes that are up there like Lisa, Denise, and all the babes. I ain't getting myself caught up with just one.

So you think you're ready for me now in basketball? Well, thats enough for now because my mind keeps flowing on Annie so I will keep you in 20/20 touch.

Your Minority Friend,
Tone the Bone

The Jennifer thing was over before it got started - same reasoning! I'm working as a flag-football official. I've been doing mostly girls games but its a lot of fun. I met Anne this way. She also cycles so we plan on riding together. In the six months that I've owned my newest bike I'm averaging over 150 miles a month. I plan on getting that up to at least 100 miles a week. My savings ran out just as the financial aid came in so things are okay financially. I've been communicating with Bryan and he plans on being back in the Spring semester.

Oh, I guess I'll give a little historical background. George Bush is the Republican candidate for President and Mike Dukakis is the Democrat. I tend to agree more with the Republican platform - as per the last two elections I'm voting Republican. November 8th is election. Last week the space shuttle went back into space after the delay caused by the Discovery explosion. The Summer Olympics are finishing up and America did well overall.

I am really starting to like a girl named Margie - a girl I met here last year. She has been dating a guy for over 3 years so I'm not holding my breath, haha, but I'm going to give it the old college try. I'm about 5'10 and I weigh 165-170 pounds. I have sandy brown hair with blue eyes. Forgive the jumpy appearance of this journal - I write things as I think of them. My favorite singer is Billy Joel - he has been called the Mozart of the 20th Century.

I've changed my major again... first, I was a computer science major, I then changed to coaching, now I am a non-teaching Kinesiology major with a Psychology minor. I hope to get into corporate fitness.

My birthday is coming up next month - November 13th. I'll be 24. I was born in 1964 - hey, it's not THAT long ago.

I think that two sources of maybe my greatest joy nowadays are my two nephews Brian and Blake (Scooter.) Brian is in the 1st grade and Scooter is 3 years old. Brian gave me the nickname "Uncle Bud" when he was about Scoot's age and now Scoot uses it. I really love those two! I only wish I could see them more - being away at college and all.

Well, its 2am in the morning - I guess I'll end it here for now

Wow... that was a HUGE entry. It also had to be the most schizophrenic - but very informational. I don't know what is more shocking as I look back - the fact that I only weighed 165 pounds or that I actually showed some emotion in a post.

Talk about your big breaks. It's been six months since I had an entry. Summer has come and gone. I managed to save $1,200 which will make this school year less of a financial burden. I am paying for all of my college expenses by myself. This is the start of my second year at Stephen F. Austin State University. I had planned to room with Bryan O. this semester, but he had some emotional problems and is now in a psychiatric clinic. I found a new roommate - Davad Sneed. He is a friend that I met last year. I think we will get along fine.

I broke it off with Lisa Grainger - she is just too wild of a girl for me - I want more of an old-fashioned girl. I have started seeing a girl named Jennifer - no big plans. As of now, I am not working but if the money situation gets too tight, I may get a job. I am taking Officiating Football, Kinesiology, Folk Dance, Abnormal Psychology & Human Sexuality. My plan right now is to bring my GPA up to a 3.5 this semester.

How simple was life back in college - I saved $1,200 and wasn't worried about how I would survive for a whole semester. THAT is the power of having no bills - you just don't need much to live. This was the first offical mention of Dave in the journal (although he was mentioned in letters to and from friends over the previous summer.) And yes, I guess we did end up getting along fine. :) (PS - Who would have imagined that 13 years to the day later we would be attacked by terrorists? It was the furthest thing from my mind back then.)

(excerpts from a letter to Terry Rochen who had to sit out a semester for grades)
...Jon actually went out and played football with Dave and I. Believe it or not, Dave didn't hurt him... I did! Oops! I was playing defensive back and he was going out for a pass. Dave threw a short little dump, Jon headed for the sideline and then turned up field. He thought he could outrun me. I caught him about 15 yards up the field and grabbed him around the shoulders. Since we weren't playing tackled, I was planning on just slowing him up. I guess he tried to wriggle free or duck away but he just went down, got backwards somehow and hit the back of his head on the ground rather hard. It wasn't anything serious, it gave him quite a headache though. He won't play anymore now.

I have a new major!!!!! Its not a drastic change. I am now a non-teaching Physical Education major with a Psychology minor. I'm thinking about getting into corporate fitness. I'm taking Folk Dance, Kinesiology, Officiating Football, Abnormal Psychology, and Human Sexuality. I think Folk Dance is gonna be my most fun class. Its full of great looking girls!

I hear that Huey Lewis is going to play on campus this semester. It should be pretty great!

This letter is a good glimpse into what my life was like in '88. Dave and I spent a lot of time playing basketball during this time and a little football too. And yes, I liked (and still do) Huey Lewis and the News - it was a big deal that they were coming to play on campus. Now that I think about it - I am not sure they ever made it. We did have Jay Leno (when he was still doing standup) and Chicago.

(excerpts from a letter to Bryan Orsborn over the summer break)
I called Terry last night after I got off the phone with you. I guess you were right, he is definitely sitting the semester out. He said he will be back in the Fall though. It was the first time all summer that I talked to him. He was afraid that he would lose all of his friends if he sat out, but I assured him that we would still keep in touch. I think I'm going to Houston the day before my plane leaves for Dallas and see a baseball game with Terry. I think we may also see one the day that I return. We'll have a chance to play some basketball then. I told him that basketball just won't be the same without his half-crazed pissed off look.

Oh, I saw Rog's car at home this weekend. I think he may have dropped out of summer school. He called me about a week ago and told me that both of his roommates skipped out on him, leaving him with a big rent to pay. He may have decided not to go during the second summer semester.

My financial situation should be much better this year. First of all, I'm eligible for more financial aid this year, about double what I had last year. In addition to that, I have a lot more saved this summer. Last summer I saved only $300, this summer I have over $1,200 already. Well things look pretty good for this year as long as we can get along as roommates. Once again, tell Marie I'm waiting for her letter. Take it easy and good luck.

Terry is another friend from college - Terry Rochen. He did make it back up to school after a semester off. Rog is Roger Keith a friend from junior high school through to college - he too ended up back on campus after sitting out the summer.

The letter contained other things about Bryan's home life situation which might reflect poorly on him and despite the fact that we had a huge falling out over a business situation long after college - I didn't think it would be very nice to talk about. Would I ever do any business with him again? Not if my ass was on fire and he had the only water stand in town.

Today I went to all of my classes and had a pretty good time. I went running for about a half mile and then ran up nine flights of stairs. I got a 2.78 GPA last semester and I enjoyed it overall, being my first semester away from home. After this semester is over it will be five years since I've graduated from high school. Our intramural football team finished 6-2 overall and in basketball we finished 4-6. This semester we will play flickerball and double volleyball.

I apparently took a four month break in my journal entries that included the Christmas break. The post about my first semester away from home and five years since graduating high school is a bit misleading. I was attending Victoria College and The University of Houston: Victoria Campus part time while working at my parent's stained glass studio right out of high school. It was after four years of this that I decided I needed to attend fulltime and headed off to Stephen F. Austin.

Today we went to practice (football.) Only about 6 people showed up. I think our offense will have more punch Thursday. I went to Physics and Art Appreciation. I fell asleep in the latter.

Wow, how is that for a short entry? I guess I was busy.

Forgot to write Monday. I went riding my bicycle around Nacogdoches for two hours. It was okay. I took a test in Measurement & Evaluation today, I should make an A on it. Oh, I made a 78 on my Physics test.

On Monday, I went to Sam Rayburn Lake with Rog to fish. We don't have any hooks or live bait so we were stuck fishing with worms (plastic.) We didn't catch a thing. The way I see it, you have to offer the fish something real or its kinda cheating.

I just got back from our third football game. I've never seen such a total screwed up display of football. Tommy tried to QB, but he lacks the field sense of a QB. Our regular QB, Lee Yeager came late and started off bad. We scored on a play that Rog & I made up. We gave up 7 points again. We won 14-7, but our people really sucked.

What pissed me off the most was that I didn't get used. I caught one pass and got about 20 yards on it, 10 of it came on the run after I caught it. I'm not a ball hog and I'm perfectly happy to see other people do good. All I know is that in three games I've had about 10 passes thrown to me and I haven't dropped a one. I've been wide open every down of every game. Our QBs just get a play stuck in their head and won't take what the defense is giving us. Sure, I only go out about 10 yards, but games are won by ball control and that means taking the short gains that add up to a drive.

I thought this team was going to be awesome because almost every player is studying to be a coach. What I've realized is that I'm gonna have a cakewalk as a coach if they're typical of the minds I'll be facing. Roger knows his stuff but the only thing I see him doing wrong is not getting mad enough to speak up when he knows that people are screwing up. Well, that's it for now. The Chickens are a lucky 3-0.

As you probably gathered, at the time of that entry, I was planning on being a football coach. The team's official name was GDI Chickens. For those of you out of the loop, GDI is an acronym created in answer to the alphabet soup of fraternity teams - it translates to "God Damn Independents." Not sure who came up with chickens, but we were the goats later in the basketball season.

Well I forgot about writing the past two days. Not much has happened. I took my Physics test Friday. It was pretty easy. I didn't go to Art Appreciation. On Saturday I played football for a little while. I didn't do much else. Today, Rog and I met Tim, Dad and Tim's family at the hospital where Mom is. She's feeling fine. A little stiff. Anyway, we got our bicycles from them as well as our fishing poles. We decided to catch us some food from Sam Rayburn Lake. Well, I made french fries and the grease smoked so bad that it set off the smoke alarm. Oh well. I guess I'll go to sleep now.

Geez, talk about your interesting days (not). And get a load of those choppy little sentences - I think my writing style has improved over the years.

Victory, Vic-tor-y! Just got back from our second football game. We won 21-7. I had a great game, I caught a pass for our first touchdown and a pass for our third touchdown. I caught about five passes total, two for touchdowns, not bad! It was a blast. On defense, I almost got an interception but you can't get them all. I went to lab and got out early because it was pretty easy. My friend, Gordie worked with me on it. I have to study for a Physics test tomorrow. Oh, I lost the nose piece to my glasses and the frame is broke but hey, that's football! I worked a couple of hours on my computer. I paid my housing bill. I guess I'll call home to see what's up with Mom. I never did get around ot working on my novels last night. Well I'm gonna make some supper and then hit the books.

What was I thinking 17 years ago?

This is the first installment of the Chris Doelle Wayback Machine.. I started keeping a journal in 1987 when I was at Stephen F. Austin University. Back then, the internet as we know it did not exist and I had to do it the old pen and paper way... but despite some large lapses in writing, I wrote quite a bit in those days. These excerpts will be a window into what was going on in my life back then as well as in my head. ( I will leave the poor grammer just as written.)

September 23, 1987

Yes, Sportsfans, this is it! The long awaited, much publicized, highly acclaimed Journal. This entry will be brief. I'm at Stephen F. Austin University studying to be a football coach and computer science teacher. Today I took a test in Art Appreciation which I should have studied more for. I probably made about an 80. We finished the last of the two physical fitness tests yesterday. I'm in pretty good shape. I'm still not in as good of shape as I have been and nowhere near where I want to be, but I'm much better that I have been before too. I ran two miles and lifted weights yesterday. None today. I worked on my computer for 2 hours. I called home and found out Mom is gonna be operated on tomorrow. I'll say a prayer for her tonight. I know she'll be fine. I got a call from housing syaing that I owe $50 deposit or I'm out. I'm fixing to start working on my second novel, the one about the college student. Oh, I didn't mean to imply that I've finished one, just not working on that one. I've got a Joe Jackson tape in and I'm about ready to start writing. I have a Physics test Friday. I have a football game tomorrow. We won our first game 21-0. Well that's it for now.

There you go... a rather disjointed, rambling entry, but it gives you a snapshot of what was going on. Look for more entries over the course of the next few weeks and months.

Got my Physical Fitness test results back today. I have 17% body fat. I guess I'll try to work out more. My goal is to get around 10% body fat. Our football team climbed to 4-0. We won this one 16-0. I'm still pissed at the way our offense is going. They won't listen when I tell them BALL CONTROL & DEFENSE WINS GAMES. Luckily, we had a lot of defense tonight. We still lack ball control. We had it in our first two games when we scored 21pts each, but the last two we scored 14 & 16. They think you have to go long to score, but our scores have proven that a drive is better than a try at a long one. Next Tuesday, we play a good team so they better get their stuff together. Well, later on.

Geez, I don't know what is more troubling to read from this post - the fact that I was unhappy with 17% body fat or that I took football that seriously - haha.
