SuperBowl party

You know, I was going to do a post about all the fun we had at the Oswalt's SuperBowl party, but I just get vacillating between cool headlines. After not being able to decide on the title for the post, I decided instead to make the post nothing more than a list of possible titles appropriate to SuperBowl XLII.

SUPER-CHOKE!
18-1 Just Doesn't Sound As Good
The Manning Miracle
Tom Who?
Giant Thriller
Less Than Perfect
Eli's Coming

You can see the quandary. I am sure that some of them will be used by other media sources because they are so obvious.

It was a fantastic finish and frankly, I am glad the perfect season didn't happen.

Quincy Carter a Copperhead?

I was shocked to read an article about Quincy Carter talking to several af2 teams about a new starting position. No, I wasn't shocked that the former Cowboy's QB was still in the af2. No, I wasn't shocked that several teams were trying to land him. I was shocked by this quote:

"Cowboys fans will swarm to arenas to see this guy play."

Uh, get real. Cowboys fans hated Quincy - he was a disaster. The idea that his presence would bring Cowboy fans to the game is a joke.. well, unless you count the ones that may go just to boo him.

Football season is over

What a way to end a great high school football season...
texasstadiumcelina055.JPG

The final game of the season for Lone Star Gridiron was at Texas Stadium. It was fitting that our biggest season for the show ended with a record setting 8th state championship title for the Celina Bobcats.

While Mike and Tony rang out the season with two title games at the Alamodome, Ron and I were witness to the perfect ending to a storybook year. Good stuff.

What'd you do today - just hung out with football stars

Yes, today and tomorrow my company is doing some filmwork covering the Rotary Lombardi Award given to the best lineman in college football.

LombardiCIMG1520.JPG

Tomorrow is another full day following the nominees all over the city as they visit children in the cancer ward of Texas Children's Hospital and MD Anderson as well as talking to at-risk kids, giving interviews, getting fitted for their tuxedos and of course, the award ceremony.

Fun stuff.

Did a Texan "out" himself on Channel 2 today?

261EphraimSalaam15.jpgWhile listening to Ephraim Salaam chat with Channel 2's Randy McIlvoy Sunday night, I heard him say about the game, "I picked him up, we almost fell. It was a little man-love - nothing wrong with man-love."

I thought nothing of it and then a couple minutes later when asked about cooking Thanksgiving dinner, he explained, "the Butterball is working, we got it all, you know, greased up. You know you got to... massage it.... you got to massage the meat...sometimes you got to massage the..." at which point he cracked up for a second, regained his composure and went on with the interview.

Kudos to Randy though as the nearly pornographic lapse elicited only a tiny smile from him. Within seconds the interview was once again professional and continued as though nothing happened. Funny stuff.

Rain delay slowing my Saturday

The weather system rolled into Katy and has delayed the game for about an hour.

It looks like things will be starting back up soon.

Playoff time in Texas!!

Last night Mike, Ronald, and myself covered our first game of the Texas high school football playoffs. The Katy Tigers took out the Strake Jesuit Crusaders at Rice Stadium on their way to what they hope will be another state title.

riceplayoffcdmw.jpg

How cool is it that I get to go to about 30 games a year of my favorite sport? I get to see them all from the comfort of the press box. More often than not, I get fed for free. I get to do it all with my very good friends AND now, thanks to the Lone Star Gridiron show achieving some success... I actually get paid to do it all!

If you doubt that this is the greatest country in the world - just come talk to me.

Heat is the order of the day

lsg200.JPGDay one of the FSN 7 on 7 Championships is in the book and it was a scorcher. There was lots of great action as the Celina Bobcats defeated the Crane Cranes in the small school championship.

I had a great time hanging with all the other media folks and of course catching a boatload of football. It really is cool that you can see most of the top division I college prospects all in one place here.

Mike of course, was in hog heaven as he got to see multiple games at the same time all day long. "The Mescan" Tony even showed up this evening after he got off work. He will check out the championship games with us tomorrow.

We had a great dinner at Sodolak's Beefmasters (I have some photos that I will post in a few days - I forgot the cable to my camera so I can't download right now.) We are about to do our third episode of Lone Star Gridiron of the day and then hit the hay. It is going to be another long day tomorrow.

Fair-to-Middling Four

Tony, Blake and I caught Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer tonight and all I kept thinking was "did George Lucas write this?"

silver-surfer-large.jpgFirst off let me say that the special effects were very cool. The Silver Surfer stuff alone was worth the price of admission. The story, dialog, and acting however left a lot to be desired. Not only does the film take a dump on fifty years of comic book history, but director Tim Story apparently couldn't coax a good story out of the weak script.

Again, the fight scenes were fun and the effects were cool, but between the campy dialog and interminable slow times that must have been there as pacing, FF:RotSS won't have much replay value.

RATING 7 out of 10

Need another reason to deplore spoiled sports stars?

michaelvickdog.jpgIn my opinion, Michael Vick of the Atlanta Falcons is SCUM... so is anyone else that is associated with cruelty of Pit Bull fighting. ESPN reported that :

On April 25, authorities raided a house in Surry County, Va., owned by Vick and reportedly found -- among other things -- 66 dogs (most of which were pit bulls), a dog-fighting pit, bloodstained carpets and equipment commonly associated with dogfighting. Vick was not at the scene and denied knowledge of dogfighting at the property.

Not only has (in my opinion) this scum been involved in dog fighting for years, but teammates and fellow dog fighting commrades refer to him as one the "big dogs" of the fight game.

I know this isn't breaking news and many of you may have already heard about it, but I just found out now and it p*ssed me off enough to blog about it.

Looks like another year of no Cowboys

I am going to take Bill Parcell's retirement announcement to mean that the Cowboys will be keeping Terrell Owens for another season. Just another in a long line of horrible moves by Jerry Jones.

If the Cowboys keep T.O. on the team, then my ban of all things Cowboys will continue. Darn, I was hoping to be able to watch them again next year.

The Mouth has a broken hand

Owens_Wash_330.jpg

Way to go Jerry Jones, once again, you have proven what an absolutely rotten football mind you have... and what total disregard you have for doing what is "right." It appears that you are getting your comeuppance on the Terrell Owens deal. Add his broken hand to his mysterious hamstring injury and it sure doesn't seem like a very good investment... and you know what Jerry? You two deserve each other.

Let's take a look at the major screwups since you soiled the Cowboys by purchasing them.

jerry_jones_150b.JPGJerry Jones: Weapon of Mass Destruction

1- You fired Tom Landry. (what a way to get off on the wrong foot with Cowboy fans)
2- You hire Jimmy Johnson. (the ONLY good move you have EVER made as an owner)
3- You fought with Johnson over the most ridiculous things despite the fact that he created a dynasty that could have rivaled the days of old. (albeit with more crack)
4- You fire Johnson and hire Switzer. (You replace the two-time defending SuperBowl Championship coach that built an amazing team with a mental midget that couldn't command the respect of a ladybug)
5- You fire Switzer and hire Chan Gailey. (I am guessing you realized that Switzer was the one that needed to wear the helmet, but Chan Gailey was just someone you knew you could control)
6- You fire Gailey and blame him for strings you were pulling behind the scene. (Not that I thought Gailey could have done a whole lot if left to his own devices, but you stirring the pot ensured failure)
7- You insist the quarterback of the future for the Cowboys is Quincy Carter. (Even Quincy thought you had lost your mind on this one, he admitted between snorts of coke and attempts to learn remedial English)
8- Another new coach Dave Campo. (If ever someone was setup to fail, it was Campo - he would have been an excellent career assistance and you even ruined that Jerry)
9- You hire "the Tuna," Bill Parcells. (What makes this a terrible move is that you are still meddling... if you would just crawl back in your hole and let him run things, the Cowboys might win again)
10- You force Terrell Owens on Parcells and the fans. (With a total disregard for your brand, a total disregard for history, and thus a total disregard for your fans, you hire this cancer)

So much damage to "America's Team" in such little time.

A Year with No Cowboys

Well, we are just days away from the unthinkable. The start of a football season in which I vow not to watch even one Cowboys' game. The year was 1973, the Cowboys were just two years past their first Super Bowl win, I was a nine year old boy that had just moved to Texas from Minnesota. I was transported from a universe of casual Vikings fans to the heart of Dallas Cowboy country in a state that lived and breathed football. The fever was contagious and I found myself watching football for the first time. I was hooked.

roster_full_1973.jpg

Those were the days of Roger Staubach, "Bullet" Bob Hayes, Billy Joe Dupree, Drew Pearson, Mel Renfro, Charlie Waters, Walt Garrison, Robert Newhouse, Cliff Harris, D.D. Lewis, Lee Roy Jordan, Bob Lilly... I can go on and on... these were to me, the "originals."

I have seen as many games as possible each season from that time forward. I watched Tony Dorsett, Hollywood Henderson, Troy Aikman, Harvey Martin, Ed "Too Tall" Jones, Emmitt Smith, Randy White, Charlie Waters, Michael Irvin, and many more join and leave the team enroute to greatness during the next 33 years. The scandals of Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson, the Dallas CrackWagon, the firing of the greatest coach in history (Tom Landy), hiring the stupidest (Barry Switzer), and even that fateful 1-15 season were not enough to make me forsake "The Boys." Terrell Owens was.

Maybe T.O. alone really doesn't warrant such a switch in devotion. Maybe what he did was not that unforgiveable... he is a showboat and showboats do things like that. Maybe it is just the total disregard by the NFL toward the fan in general. Maybe it is the total destruction of the "my team" aspect caused by the Player's Union and the infamous Plan B Free Agency. Maybe it was the skyrocketing cost of attending an actual game. Maybe one too many spoiled sports professional got away with crimes or other bad behavior. Maybe it was just the last straw. Maybe as Dave says, I have indeed officially become a curmudgeon.

Regardless of why... I am less than three days away from ending a streak of 33 years. I have to admit, as I get closer and closer to kickoff, I hope I can hold out.

Time to sell Footlocker stock!!

Footlocker is set to lose millions as they will have to provide new uniforms for shoe salesmen all over the country. That's right - the NFL has changed its stripes! Gone are the zebra stripes that have been a staple of football since its inception as the era of the flashier officials is ushered in.

I don't know... maybe I am old-fashioned. (Wait, of course I am - after all Dave has been calling me a curmudgeon for years.) I just prefer that some traditions remain. I was shocked just a few minutes ago, watching the first NFL snaps I have seen this year (I detest preseason and normally skip all of it.) They look so... so... well, European - ugh! I mean, it looks like something you would see on a soccer field - BLASPHEMY!!

What's next? Pom-poms for the back judge? Sequins on the chain crew? A neon football? Some things are best left unchanged.

Will Reggie Go #1?

The odds on favorite to be selected as the #1 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft is Reggie Bush. Houston Texans owner Bob McNair has made it abundantly clear that they are looking long and hard at Bush. So why don't I believe them? In this game of Texas Hold 'Em, there are way too many cards on the table for McNair's bluff to work. The most obvious reason the Texans will not select Reggie Bush is that he is not what the team needs. Dominick Davis has rushed for over 1,000 yds in each of his two previous seasons with the Texans. And that is with two seasons of offensive line problems, not to mention the Texans signed him to a big contract just this year. He is a dual threat back with some of the best hands at his position in the entire league. What the heck do you need Reggie Bush for? Sure, he is the best RB in the draft, but I can't help but see this as a ploy by the Texans to cash in while trading down.

The Texans need help on the line, OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson fills that need nicely and will be available much later in the draft. DE Mario Williams out of North Carolina State fills probably their biggest need but, unless they are only trading down a few spots, Houston would need to use that top choice on him as it is unlikely he will last long. The early favorite to head to the Bayou City, Vince Young, QB out of the University of Texas, is pretty much out of the running since the Texans extended David Carr's contract.

Whether they select Reggie as the #1 pick and trade him or just make the move on draft day before the selection, don't count on seeing Reggie Bush in the Lone Star State unless somehow he is wearing a star on his helmet... and that isn't very likely.

Another one bites the dust

I am swearing off watching the Cowboys. No, I am not picking another team - I am just not watching them or supporting them in any way until Terrell Owens no longer wears the silver and blue. Not only did he disrepect the star in Texas Stadium while a member of the 49ers... he is a loud-mouthed, vile, jerk. I simply refuse to support him or my beloved Cowboys until they part ways.

Some of you will remember that I swore off watching my Los Angeles Lakers until Kobe Bryant is no longer on the team also. Am I becoming a bitter old man or are professional sports teams becoming less about the game, less about the fans, and less about setting a good example? Remember the days when athletes were decent human beings? Would a man like Lou Gehrig make it today? How about someone like Johnny Unitas? Not likely. Today it is all about thugs, punks, and asses.

Just as the public is walking away from the garbage delivered by mainstream radio... things will only change in sports when we start walking away. I for one - am gone.

Reggie WHO?

Take that California!

Take that Reggie Bush!

Take that USC

Vince Young showed the world he deserved the Heisman. The Texas Longhorns showed the world they are the #1 team. Texas showed California that everything is bigger and better in the Lone Star State!!

Congratulations to the University of Texas Longhorns for doing what nobody (except us diehard fans) thought was possible.

Cowboys Report Card

Once again, this loss goes firmly on the head of coach Bill Parcells. I mean, come on man - how many times do you have to run up the middle for three and out before you realize that with a 7-3 lead in the 3rd quarter, it is way too soon to try to burn the clock? Get used to the fact that this is a passing team and just make first downs. Parcells has not only cost us two wins, but has the team in peril late in the the game every single time except for the Philly game - the ONE time he let the offense keep going the entire game. Moron!

Cowboys Report Card

Well, what can you say about a game in which the Cowboys turn the ball over four times? You would think that would mean they played horrible - but in this case, it appeared to be more a case of bad breaks.

I am getting a little tired of these close games. With the exception of the Eagles matchup, this has been a nailbiting season and this game was the roughest of all on the ol' digits. In overtime, the Cowboys pull off another tight one against the Giants 16-13.

I can't really fault the play of anyone for the closeness and actually have to give mad props to the defense for shutting down New York. I am however, concerned about the injuries - if Crayton is as badly injured as he appears, it could become a very costly win.

Cowboys Report Card

Parcells must read my blog. If you'll remember last week I was railing against his conservative play calling. WOW, did things change this week. The offense game out throwing strikes and stunned the Eagles as they ran up a huge early lead and then held on to get the win 33-10. At 3-2, they still have a long way to go in a very tough division, but this game against a previously undefeated division rival is a great start.

Cowboys Report Card

The Cowboys have lost two games this season and BOTH of those I put firmly on the shoulders of Coach Bill Parcells. He has an excellent passing team and he is afraid to use it. Parcells continues to run the ball when everyone in the stadium knows he is running - and passes when everyone knows he is passing.

Don't get me wrong, I believe in establishing the run early and making it a huge part of the game. I believe in Jones' ability to carry the ball - but come on, you gotta be a little less predictable. Parcells is afraid to open up the game and in the rare occasion we have a lead, he trys to milk the clock for FAR longer than our running game can. When we need to make a big pass play, we have always made it this season - so why won't he trust the team's ability to make a big pass play to establish or build a lead?

Now I am not a coach basher - I never have been. In the history of the Dallas Cowboys, I have rooted for every single coach and this is only the second coach that has received criticism. (Switzer received a bit of my ire when he destroyed what Jimmy Johnson had built.) I never questioned Landry, heck, I never even had a problem with Chan Gailey - but Parcells you better recognize that you cannot force a team to conform to your game plan - you have some great talent and you need to modify the plan to meet their skills.

Don't even get me started on the horrendous defensive play calling!

Cowboys Report Card

Well game one is in the books, the Cowboys started off a little wobbly, got things under control and then hung on for a wild ride. The defense as a whole did not do a very good job - it took two very luck 3rd down penalties to keep drives alive that lead to their two final TD's. Let's take a look at the breakdown of some areas of play that stood out.

QUARTERBACK -- Drew Bledsoe is Drew Bledsoe. He holds the ball a long time and takes a lot of sacks... BUT, when he throws the ball, it goes where it is intended. He also doesn't get flustered in tight situations. Overall, he did a great job in his first game as Captain of America's Team as he surpassed 40,000 yards for his career.

RUNNING GAME -- Julius Jones is the real deal. He wasn't flashy, he wasn't a big-time gamebreaker... but he was consistent and kept running all day. At the end of the day, he turned in some nice totals and if he can stay healthy, should turn in a pretty good season.

RECEIVERS -- In preseason last year, I was perplexed as to why the Cowboys would keep Crayton on the roster. He dropped balls, he blew routes, he made mental errors. Well, it goes to show that just watching someones preseason games is not a good way to judge their ability. Crayton ROCKED! He is a bona-fide NFL receiver and could become a great part of the team's offense. Witten is superb as usual and Keyshawn Johnson even showed up.

DEFENSIVE BACKS -- This is our source of greatest strength (Roy Williams) and greatest weakness (Terence Newman.) The problem is that everyone knows Newman is back there and even with the addition of Anthony Henry, we have pretty porous coverage. They nutted-up at key times, but it was their poor play that set up those tight situations.

Cowboys 28 - Chargers 24

Wayback - January 2, 1989

First entry of the new year! Well, I've been to see Dawn every night for the past five days. Don't freak out - theres nothing romantic going on... she is happy with her friend Brad - in fact, she's in Corpus Christi visiting him which probably explains why I found the time to write.

My foot injury flared up - it developed an abcess and just as I thought it was getting better, it swelled up and started hurting. This morning I went in to see Dr. Ted and get it fixed. It was his day off and he saw me anyway. (He is a good friend of my dad.) He cut it open and squeezed all the puss and blood out. It hurt like #@*!! Right now its 9:30PM and it hurts like hell. I haven't been able to bicycle or play basketball in several days.

I also lost my voice yesterday. I don't feel bad, but I can't talk very good.

In the sports world - #1 Notre Dame deated #3 West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl total to capture the National Championship. UCLA defeated Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl. UCLA's quarterback Troy Aikman is likely to be the number one draft choice of the Dallas Cowboys - but I think if Steve Walsh decided to quit college ball early, he would be a good choice.

Well, I guess that's all for now and until next time, may all your jumpers hit nothing but the bottom of the net.

PS. In reading back, I realized that I didn't explain the foot injury - back on the 20th, I stepped on a toothpick which went into my foot about an inch. It was right on the ball of the foot making walking impossible. It got better and a couple of days ago, it started to swell so I had to get it cut open today.

Another interesting post... I spent an awful lot of time that Christmas break writing about Dawn even though we had been broken up for a very long time at that point. Reading the post also caused me to reflect on the fact that my dad, his friend Dr. Ted and Notre Dame's football program are now dead. The post also points to conclusive evidence of what I call my greatest sports prognostication flub ever... I was in the Steve Walsh camp and thought that Aikman would not develop into a long-term pro QB. Oh well.

Its been awhile since I wrote last. Its 11:13 PM - I'm sitting in the apartment listening to Billy Joel on my tape player.

I went to the football game today. Prior to todays game, the SFA Lumberjacks (our team) were ranked #9 in the nation (the best in their history) and we played the team ranked #1 - the University of North Texas. (DIV-II) We beat them! It was great. We should be ranked in the top 5 by tomorrow.

I've become really good friends with a girl named Margie. She's everything you could ask for in a girl. She's smart - shes funny - she is just a joy to be around. Her qualities are too numerous to mention.

Well, my lofty goal of a 3.5 GPA this semester is shot to heck. I'll probably end up somewhere around the 2.0 range. I constantly procrastinate about studying.

Bush is ahead of Dukakis in the polls by 10-15%. The election is a few days away.

Larry Centers who went on to NFL fame was our running back and Todd Hammel who went on to be one of the top QBs in Arena Football was our quarterback... it was a fun team to watch. We won't go into any detail about Margie - haha... obviously she wasn't so darn perfect. (Hmm... or it just may have been me - haha)

Following is an excerpt from a letter I received around the same time from Tony Vasquez shortly after a visit up to see me at SFA:

What's happening crazy one? Right now I'm watching the Dodgers demolish the Mets . It is 6-0 right now Dodgers winning. Boy this is great a possibility that the Dodgers will be playing the A's in the World Series.

I have spent most of my fun time with Annie (you know my special friend from Cody's) that I have not seen or heard from Mike or Donald lately....

I can't just wait to say hi to all the fine and gorgeous babes that are up there like Lisa, Denise, and all the babes. I ain't getting myself caught up with just one.

So you think you're ready for me now in basketball? Well, thats enough for now because my mind keeps flowing on Annie so I will keep you in 20/20 touch.

God Wants Him to Play

If you needed another reason to dislike T.O. (Terrell Owens) when asked if his return to play was a miracle - if there was divine intervention that got him to the game, he said, "Definitely, God has blessed me... if you don't believe in miracles, just wait for Sunday."
It is nice to know that with hundreds of thousands killed in the tsunami, US and Iraqis dieing on a daily basis, and the bird flu spreading through China that God is spending his time making sure that this big-mouthed, braggart can play in the SuperBowl.
Owens went futher by telling the Media Day throng of reporters who asked him why he would play if he is not cleared by his doctor, "God already cleared me - it doesn't really matter what a doctor said."

Willowridge turns ugly

Mike and I continued our quest to see some of the best football in Texas... well, we saw some of it last night, but we also saw some of the worst. Here is the letter I just sent off to the administration at Fort Bend Willowridge High School in reference to the game.

I sent the letter to:

School District
Dr. Betty Baitland, Superintendent FBISD
Dr. Susan Wey, Area Superintendent FBISD

Ft. Bend Willowridge High School
Billy Polk, Principal
Ronnie Adams, Associate Principal

-----------------------
I attended the playoff game between Willowridge and Memorial last night and I have to say that I was disgusted by the performance of the Willowridge players and their coaches.

Two teams that have worked hard all season, including a win in the first round of the playoffs squared off to see whose state championship dreams stay alive. The game featured some great plays - excellent effort by the players - and tons of excitement for the fans.

The game started to get out of hand early in the fourth quarter and a couple of bad apples on the Willowridge squad started talking trash to the fans, the officials and the other team. The officials did nothing! It was their responsibility to keep the game in control and once they started letting these offenses go unflagged, thing escalated. It was then that I was telling my friend, "If these officials don't start throwing flags for this nonsense right now, someone is going to get hurt."

As the game wound down and it was obvious that Willowridge was not going to win, the trash talking turned into late hits and outright thuggery. On four different occasions, the play had been blown dead when a Willowridge player would haul off and flatten a Memorial kid who was walking back to the huddle or similarly not involved in the play at all. It finally culminated in a cheap shot in the back of the leg which resulted in a long medical timeout while they helped the poor kid off the field. THEN, the officials called a penalty.

What was supposed to be a memory of a lifetime for these student athletes turned into a bad dream for at least one kid and left a sour taste for the thousands involved.

My friend and I have picked a different game each week from the top teams in the state and seen a ton of great teams. We have seen courageous play, valiant efforts and the pure excitement of Texas high school football. We have seen a lot of good during this and previous seasons. This is NOT the norm.

The official should certainly shoulder some of the responsibility, but the Willowridge coaches did nothing to reign in their team. Shame on them for not putting an end to the poor sportsmanship and outright meanness. Those players involved (and I am sure you have access to game video) can be easily identified and should be facing consequences for their actions. Failure to reprimand the officiating crew, the coaches and the players involved is the same as condoning their actions.

Chris Doelle
Football fan and thug hater.

PS. I have no affiliation with either team and had previously never seen either play. I am just a fan that enjoys good, clean football. #92 was the chief instigator and incited the others. Also, it should be noted that #11 was a class act and walked over, shook the hand of a Memorial player and then motioned to the Mustangs congratulating them for their win.

High School Gridiron

Wow... we have some exceptional high school football right here in the Houston area. In fact, it was that realization that prompted Mike Wright and I to start going to high school games. After some football small talk, it just slowly dawned on me that there are about a dozen state champion caliber teams all within a short distance of us...

Last week Mike, Dave and I went to Humble to see the Humble Wildcats take on the Katy Tigers. This battle of the behemoths turned into a showcase for another great Katy Tiger team. Katy's defense took control as the Wildcats deep bombing threat never got off the ground.

Before the game...

Yes... of course I am focusing on Dave in this shot...

Friday Night Lights BABY!!!

Pennie, Mike and I went this weekend to Conroe to watch The Woodlands Highlanders hosting the Humble Wildcats. Again, we picked the right team as The Woodlands threw 58 points up against Humble's non-existent defense, thanks in large part to former major league baseball player, Doug Drabek's son who played wide receiver, punter and kick returner.

Texans - Buccaneer Preseason Game

I was all set to attend a Bush/Cheney acceptance speech party Thursday night when I got a call from Mike Wright. In a move indicative of the voter malaise in this country, after hearing his offer, I instead went to the football game with Mike and Manny. The game was preseason so the real entertainment was Manny himself. While on a freebie run (I got a Texans beach towel for signing up for a credit card that will be cancelled immediately if they are desperate enough to approve me,) he was drooling over anything remotely female that passed so I took the initiative to get him a photo with the girls handling the Designated Driver booth. (You sign a little card stating that you are not going to drink and that you will agree to drive your drunk friends home - and you get a free soft drink at the concession stand - at these prices... SCORE!!)

Here is the Dark Diver with his love-interests-of-the-moment...

We had a lot of fun and actually saw some football too... haha. The conversation however, cannot be repeated, reprinted or even hinted at. :)

Yet more football....

Wow, it has been a football year and the pros haven't even started. Mike and I went to the Battle for the Bayou Bucket featuring the Houston Cougars and Rice Owls. Last season, the Coogs had one hell of an offense and regularly put up 50+ points so I was expecting a high scoring whupping on the lowly Owls who are struggling to even keep their athletic program.

As a show of solidarity for Mike who graduated from UH-Victoria Campus, I wore my UH Hispanic Media Association tshirt I was given after speaking to the group about video production. I have always liked Rice more simply because I like their uniforms and colors better... plus since I have never chosen a team to follow in college, I kinda root for the underdogs.

Well, these underdogs bit. The Owls not only shut down the Cougar scoring machine, but ran the option to perfection enrout to the 10-7 victory. It was a shutout until 9 seconds left when Houston scored a trash TD.

Mike gave me a hard time about missing most the Texans/Bucs preseason game because Manny and I were running around getting pictures and just generally screwing around. I promised him that I would watch the game... (and frankly, Manny is tiring to be around, I would much rather sit and watch a good football game)

I did however sneak in a photo with the designated driver girls before the game...

Overall, it was a lot of fun. The atmosphere at a college game is so much cooler because you are watching people who are not only not spoiled millionaires, but are actually working their butts off. The college bands and the fans just help add to the aura that is college football.

High school football is the same way and Mike and I plan to try and catch some of the great matchups this season. We have some of the top teams in the nation and state within 50 or so miles of us so hopefully we can view some of those games.

They Cowboyed-up Against the Raiders

The Dallas Cowboys looked much better in their second preseason game against the Oakland Raiders. All three quarterbacks led the Cowboys to long scoring drives, including third quarterback Tony Romo, who wasn't even expected to play against the Raiders. But Romo engineered a 17-play, 59-yard drive which included two fourth-down conversions. Romo also scored the winning touchdown, sneaking in from one yard out with just six seconds to play . . . Vinny Testaverde played the first half and completed 13-of-17 passes for 124 yards, while Drew Henson was 7-of-9 for 53 yards. Henson actually checked off receivers this time and looked much more at-ease in the pocket. Dallas won the contest 21-20 (Click to read Sundays newspaper writeups of the game)

I was upset to see coach Joe Avezzano on the sidelines in Raiders silver and black. Apparently, former Cowboys' offensive coordinator-turned Raiders head coach, Norv Turner has hired the leagues only three time Special Teams Coach of the Year winner to handle those same duties for Oakland.

QC is no more!

Quincy Carter is GONE!!

There IS a God!!! The Dallas Cowboys have released Quincy Carter! That means Hambrick, Carter and Galloway have been replaced by Eddie George, Vinny Testaverde and Keyshawn Johnson.

Jerry - LISTEN UP!

Jerry Jones: Will you please admit that it was a mistake to think that a backup QB from Georgia could lead America's Team and.... GET RID OF QUINCY NOW?!!

Say it ain't so

The NFL's all-time leading rusher Emmitt Smith is no longer wearing the star on his helmet and will no longer saunter onto the field in the silver and blue of America's Team. It brings a tear to the eye of any Cowboy fan to see this sight:

It is nearly as painful as the Cowboys' recently published depth chart listing Quincy Carter and Chad Hutchinson as CO-STARTERS! What kind of politically-correct-let's-be-kind-to-the-wanna-be-QB bull is this? Carter was a no-talent bum the last two seasons and he is still a overpaid-burger-flipper this season. Hell, I would rather see, Jerry Jones QB than Quick-hit-me Carter!

I thought Bill Parcels had more balls than that. Pick a QB and live with it.. his quote:

"I don't know what I'm going to do just yet," Parcells said. "I might just play three guys, I'm not really sure though. Probably just about 20 plays each."
